DesignPhiladelphia Exhibition
Nurturing Childhood Enlightenment
DesignPhiladelphia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a city that is designed for and by everyone, provided a platform to showcase the exhibition "Designing a Learning City." Supported by research from the Playful Learning Landscapes Action Network (PLLAN) and funded by the William Penn Foundation, the exhibition drew inspiration from the five sacred pillars of childhood enlightenment—fun, activity, engagement, meaning, and social interaction.
radiantHUE's challenge was to create an exhibition to demonstrate how cities can become dynamic hubs of learning and discovery for everyone while incorporating the design to enhance community engagement, promote social equity, and nurture childhood enlightenment.
The Results
To bring the exhibition to life, radiantHUE embraced the title "Playful Learning" and leaned into vibrant colors, layered shapes, and engaging imagery. The space at Cherry Street Pier and the Center for DesignPhiladelphia was transformed into an interactive playground, inviting visitors of all ages and backgrounds to explore, learn, and play together. A colorful hopscotch installation was one of the focal points, encouraging social interaction and physical activity while reinforcing the exhibition's theme of playful learning and sparking meaningful conversations about the role of design in shaping inclusive learning experiences for all among festival attendees.
Its impact extended beyond DesignPhiladelphia, as the exhibition gained traction and is now being reimagined for launch at the District Architecture Center in Washington, DC, in Fall 2024. As cities evolve, "Designing a Learning City" reminds us of the boundless potential of playful learning landscapes to nurture childhood enlightenment and foster thriving communities.
